I never thought I would be that person that would love the new-age Disney, but who am I kidding? I love everything Disney. Now when I heard they were coming out with a Polynesian princess I couldn’t wait to watch how they would piece together the amazing movie that it was.
I loved the movie so much, I had to watch it a second time in theaters. Even crazier I memorized that movie. I looked for every Disney Easter egg in the movie and even found Olaf (no one can really find him, he definitely is a hard one.)
But I digress. I am specifically here to talk about why I love Moana, the beautiful expressive princess herself.
This isn’t the first time Disney has made a bold, beautiful, adventurous princess. So, what makes her different from a lot of the others?
Here are four ways:
- She isn’t looking for love. She has her heart in place to help the people of her island and pretty much save the world. Granted, Elsa and Merida weren’t looking for love either. But it was a circulated topic in their movies. In Moana, the thought of a love interest never even comes up.
- She was chosen. Unlike, Mulan’s inability to follow the rules helped her save all of China she had use her free will to do it. (Not saying anything is wrong with that.) However, Moana was specifically destined to be the savior. She was a natural born leader and meant to do nothing but great things.
- She’s the first princess ever to say she is, “Not a princess.” Even though, she obviously is a princess, Disney finds a way to note that they are more than just Disney princesses, which made them huge in the first place.
- Now this reason, is by far my most favorite because this is exactly what I want for my daughter to be able to do in a way I never embraced before. Moana is very in touch with her culture. She not only lives it, but constantly learns from it. Having a biracial daughter, I want Alice to be able to grow up and know and understand from both sides of the family. I want her to be in touch with her roots. It doesn’t have to identify her; just help her understand it’s a part of who she is.
All in all, Moana is a movie well rounded for everyone to watch. Yes, the movie came out two years ago, but it is streaming now on Netflix. Besides, my daughter loves it and so do I.
